The Reel Solutions archive has today been swelled by 300 classic films on 35mm prints. Think Wajda. Think Kurosawa. Think Resnais. Think titles like Kanal, Red Beard and Last Year at Marienbad. April 8 was a red letter day for us, making Reel Solutions the custodian of the north’s largest independent film collection.
I firmly believe that 35mm is the new vinyl. Twenty years ago music fans around the world were gleefully clearing out their record collections and replacing vinyl with CDs. Now many are returning to vinyl for its sound quality.
Is film dead? Or will cineastes in the future look back to the early years of the 21st century and lament the wholesale stampede towards digital cinema that has seen traditional 35mm films dumped in the skip? I suggest the latter. Reel Solutions is hoovering up prints from wherever it can, whenever it can. Existing titles on our books include Lucky Luciano, Halloween II, The Wind in the Willows and Under Milk Wood, which we also distribute.
Adding gems by great auteurs brings the number of films in our archive to close on 500. And we hope to add even more. As the saying goes: watch this space…
