Actor Nigel Terry, who portrayed King Arthur in John Boorman’s epic Excalibur, has died. He was 69. It is reported that he had been suffering from emphysema.
Terry enjoyed a long career, primarily on stage. He was part of the ensemble cast of The Lion in Winter, alongside Peter O’Toole, Katharine Hepburn, Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton but his movie breakthrough came a dozen years later as the lead in Excalibur. Playing Arthur from young man to weary king – in a cast that also boasted Helen Mirren, Nicol Williamson, Gabriel Byrne and Liam Neeson – he carried the film and the sword that embodied the honour of Arthur and his knights.
