Widescreen delights destined for Bradford

Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 – A Space Odyssey, still awesome after almost 50 years.

The Widescreen Weekend in Bradford has pulled off a double whammy of a coup by landing two very special guests: actress Leslie Caron – aka Gigi – and special effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull, who worked on 2001 – A Space Odyssey.

The event runs from October 15-18 and will focus exclusively on widescreen cinema in all its forms. Among the classics set for screenings are Fiddler on the Roof, Oklahoma! How the West Was Won and The Magnificent Seven, and my personal favourite from the canon of the late Richard Attenborough, A Bridge Too Far. This tremendous epic war movie boasts an all-star line-up that includes Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Laurence Olivier, Hardy Kruger, James Caan, Anthony Hopkins, Gene Hackman, Dirk Bogarde, Liv Ullmann and Robert Redford.

Both Caron and Trumbull will be interviewed, and Gigi and 2001 – A Space Odyssey will be screened.
