Farewell to Gunnar Hansen, my friend the movie villain

Woke up this morning to the very sad news that my friend Gunnar Hansen, aka Leatherface in the original The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, has died at the age of 68.

I had dinner with Gunnar back in July when he was a guest at HorrorCon UK in Sheffield. We hadn’t seen each other for 15 years but it might have been 15 minutes. He was a warm, funny, smart and generous man.

Much of our conversation revolved around a film we had made together with Jim Moran directing in 2001, which had been released on DVD. He was pleased to see it but amused that it was only available on Region 2. “I’ll have to figure out a way to get it converted,” he said. “That’s pirating,” I replied. And he laughed.

Our last communication came after he had spent some time in hospital. He was too poorly to contribute a foreword to a new book I had completed. His recovery, he said, would be slow.

Now he’s gone. I will miss him very, very much.
