The people of the UK and Eire have voted with their wallets on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, giving the film the biggest opening day in cinema history.

Early indications are that the film raked in £9.6 million ($14.3 million) on its opening day in Britain. That’s a new UK and Ireland industry record according to studio and distributor Disney. In Italy the film took $2 million.

The record for the biggest opening day was previously held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 – like Star Wars another movie made in the UK – with £9.5 million.
